YOUR AMAZING BODY NO. 2
How many cells does your body create every second?
Your body produces 25 million new cells each second. So every 5 minutes, you produce more cells than there are people in the world!
It gets even more astounding. Our bodies contain trillions of cells, organized into more than 200 types. At any given time, each cell is doing thousands of jobs, like creating and using energy, manufacturing proteins, building skin or bone, pumping out hormones, or making antibodies.
So if someone asks, “Are you busy?”, the answer is always ‘yes’!
The largest human cell is the human egg, which is about the size of this full stop. (The illustration is of a human egg that has divided into two, which takes about 30 hours after fertilisation.)
And that one tiny egg cell contains about 2 metres of DNA – and is made up of at least 125 million atoms – many of which are the same atoms that formed during the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago. You are literally made of star stuff.
